Just over a week ago we were thrilled and so proud to be awarded with Gloucester area CAMRA Club Of The Year!!
This is a prestigious award that recognises the quality and care taken in delivering quality ales to our customers!!
Read here what Peter Bennetts (area and county coordinator and Chair) had to say about us here:
“It’s a real pleasure to be here tonight on behalf of CAMRA to celebrate somewhere that represents exactly what great clubs and great beer are all about — community, character, and quality.
We’re here to present the award for Gloucester CAMRA Club of the Year to Churchdown Club — and I can’t think of a more deserving winner.
I have only lived in Gloucester for two years although I have lived in Gloucestershire for nearly thirty. It was my first experience of the Churchdown Club earlier this year.
The ultimate goal for any establishment is to be National Champion, The Mid Gloucester Branch comprises of Gloucester of which Churchdown is part, The Forest of Dean, Cirencester, Dursley and Stroud.
Representatives from each of these areas are appraising each others winners and the branch winner will be announced in March. There are four branches in Gloucestershire - North Cotswold, Tewkesbury, Cheltenham and Mid Gloucestershire the establishments from each of these will go on to be entered for the West Central regional pub of the Year. A final four are then picked which go on to be the National winner.
This year Gloucestershire pubs and clubs got into the final four Nationally with the Pelican in Gloucester, The Carpenters Arms in Westrip the Cider pub and Finally Cheltenham Motor Club. Three of these are in Mid Gloucestershire.
CAMRA’s Club of the Year awards aren’t just about what’s in the glass — although that certainly matters! It’s about the whole experience. It’s about consistency, welcome, atmosphere, and the role a club plays at the heart of its community. And Churchdown Club absolutely delivers on all fronts.
From the moment you walk in here, you can feel it. This is a club run with pride, care, and a genuine love for its members and guests. The beer is kept beautifully, the choice is thoughtful, and the standards are high week in, week out — which is exactly what real ale deserves.
Clubs like this don’t thrive by accident. They thrive because of dedicated staff, hardworking volunteers, a supportive committee, and members who use and value their club. Whether it’s social events, sports, entertainment, or just a good chat over a well-kept pint, Churchdown Club is clearly a vital part of local life.
The club runs an annual beer festival in May.
CAMRA’s mission is to promote real ale, cider, perry, and thriving pubs and clubs — and Churchdown Club shows how a club can do all of that while also being a true community hub. In a time when many venues face challenges, this club is not just surviving — it’s setting the standard.
So, on behalf of CAMRA and the Gloucestershire branch, I’d like to say a huge congratulations to everyone involved. This award belongs to all of you — the team behind the bar, the cellar team, the committee, the volunteers, and the members who make this club what it is.
Thank you for your hard work, your hospitality, and for continuing to champion great real ale in such a welcoming setting.
It now gives me great pleasure to present Churchdown Club with the certificate for Gloucester CAMRA Club of the Year.
